ELPA alumnus LaVar Charleston will be recognized with a 2019 Forward Under 40 Award at a Wisconsin Alumni Association Founders’ Day event in Madison.
Brett Ranon Nachman, ELPA doctoral student, served as the lead author of a journal article recently published in Community College Journal of Research and Practice on how community college websites depict autism. He and co-author Dr. Kirsten Brown (Edgewood College) discovered, per the article’s title, much “omission and othering” of autism. Here is a link to the article.

Changhee Lee, ELPA PhD student and WCER researcher Ross J. Benbow, as part of a research group that includes ELPA affiliate Matthew T. Hora just published a paper in the Higher Education titled: “Teaching-focused social networks among college faculty: exploring conditions for the development of social capital.”
Yi-Hwa Liou, faculty member at National Taipei University of Education, Department of Educational Management recently received a prestigious early career award; the Taiwan counterpart to the National Science Foundation. Dr. Liou, the only social scientist to receive the award, earned both her Master’s and PhD in ELPA.
Shelby Cosner, ELPA PhD 2005, was recently promoted to a professor from Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition, Dr. Cosner has just accepted the position of Director of UIC’s Center for Urban Education Leadership.
UW–Madison scholars gain global perspectives at summer institute hosted by Beijing Normal Four scholars with ties to the School of Education traveled to China earlier this summer to take part in the 2018 International Network of Education Institutes’ (INEI) Summer Program, which was hosted by Beijing Normal University. The institute is an effort to build a cross-cultural platform for meaningful intellectual dialogue. Those from UW–Madison taking part in the program included: Hanna Lichtenstein and Kristen McNeill, who are master’s degree students with the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis’ Global Higher Education program; alumna Carolyn Schroeder; and Adam Nelson, a Professor with the Department of Educational Policy Studies.

Brett Nachman, ELPA PhD student, wrote a chapter on community college honors students embarking on transfer to four-year institutions with honors programs, and what institutional partnerships among honors programs may look like. The chapter was called “Bridging the Academic Gap” and was published in the Structural Challenges and the Future of Honors Education (Honors Education in Transition) book, recently published by Rowman and Littlefield.
